I see a lot of good answers so far but,one aspect I do not see listed yet, but a very important one for me personally is the way Americans treated returning service men. I returned when I was 19 years old and could not understand why. I was turned down for jobs, people picked fights, some families wouldn't let me date their daughters after they found out where I had been. Finally, like most other vets, I made every effort to not let it be known. That was a shame, but life was a lot easier that way. It was a shameful situation and I'm happy to see that the troops today are respected and they just did what the politicians ordered. A "Welcome home" 30 some years later just doesn't seem to mean much.

Invasion of Cambodia

The bombing of North Vietnam would also be good. There are many points to cover on that. Targets were selected by civilians at the whitehouse. Anti-Aircraft defenses of the North were not suppressed. The bombing was stopped and started to achieve political gains rather than to effect a military outcome.

The siege of Casion. North Vietnamese artillery batteries located in Laos were allowed to fire on the base, and were not attacked because they were across the border in Laos.

How about the anti-war protesters allowed to travel in north Vietnam, Hanoi Jane Fonda being one of the main ringleaders. Sitting in a anti-aircraft gun and saying she would love to shoot down an american airplane.

take a look at 1967- 1968 and the Tet Offensive, then for a different point of view, look at the anti war movements at that time, the end of the hippie era(woodstock) and that will give you the material of how divided the thinking was between two sides of America living at the same time.then explain the difference of how the ideals and the sacrifices for each sides way of thinking was

My parents freaked out about Kent state college when some students got shot and everybody freaked. My parents couldn't get over the fact that one student gets shot and killed and the nation weeps while hundreds of his fellow age mates were being killed in vietnam and nobody seemed to care.

There was no plan for final victory! No explanation as to why the military did this, but why we could not invade North Vietnam. The old standard explanation of the fear of China & Russia getting involved was wearing itself out.

Democratic President Lyndon Baines Johnson looked into the eyes of the american people and said, "I will not send another american boy to vietnam". As he was saying that he sent more than 125,000 more troops into a combat zone.

Kind of reminds me of Bill Clinton, "I did not have sex with that woman"!

What is it with Democrats?

The biggest controversy that happened in the Vietnam war was the My Lai mass murder of innocent civilians.lt was a massacre committed by U.S. soldiers on hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians, mostly women and children, on March 16, 1968, in the hamlet of My Lai, during the Vietnam War. It prompted widespread outrage around the world and reduced American support at home for the war in Vietnam.
