I know someone, over 50 who was just released from prison. His charge was drug related. Now he is out, and due to a heart condition and other various body ailments (he did construction for 30 years) he is not employable in his field any longer. On top of that, he has no other experience. On top of that, there is now this issue of a criminal history. He says he was told or read in jail, that there are loans available for ex offenders, and something about social security that you can claim for a period of time. However, he also thinks he may be eligible for disability because of his health conditions (which don't relate to the incarceration at all) .. What organizations should he contact first? Having absolutely no working knowledge about any of this, I am at a loss as to how to help him. Let me remind you, we are talking about a man who worked 7 days a week for 30 years, not some run of the mill criminal. Please refrain from rude and insulting responses. I am looking for real guidance.

First, call the Social Security/Disability office and get the paperwork he would need to fill out, to see if he'd qualify. I wouldn't look up loans until you do that, because he can't pay a loan back if he can't work, and his credit could be ruined. Sounds like he's already got enough strikes against him...no sense in making a new one, you know?

It will depend on several things...his heart condition and the extent of it, and they may even try to find work for him that he could do with his condition if he's able. They may even offer him training courses in something new.

First let me say that this is the best question I have seen in a LONG time here on yahoo answers.EXCELLENT sentence structure,spelling,grammar.......

Now,to answer your question, the first step to take is to contact your local Social Security center, and start the process to apply for disability.USUALLY,you/he won't have an answer for six months or so.It's tedious, and at times aggravating, but well worth it in the end.

Good luck!

YOU'VE TAKEN A FIRST GOOD STEP. FOLLOW UP WITH RESEARCH ON SOCIAL SECURITY SITES. BETTER YET HAVE HIM GO AND SEE THEM, FIND OUT THE REQUIREMENTS AND GO FROM THERE. AS FOR THE OTHER POSSIBILITIES, GO MTO YOUR HOME PAGE AND START SEARCHING. HAVE YOUR WATCHAMACALLIT TOGETHER BEFORE INITIAL CONTACTS, ALSO CHECK OUT PRISON MINISTRIES, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE HAS BEEN RELEASED I KNOW THAT THEY WOULD BE HAPPY TO HELP. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS
