A guy at work, who isn't Christian, is honest enough to agree with this and calls himself an agnostic.

Well it's good to see that the guy at work is being honest. He and you are correct; you must be all-knowing to be an atheist.

An atheist is just someone who believes there isn't a spirit being more intelligent than himself or his/her like minded friends. Sorry to say there are atheists.

There is one sense where one can argue your question. The argument is as follows and I subscribe to it:

(1) Every human being functions with a belief system.
(2) Every human belief system has orders of priority.
(3) Whatever belief is given highest priority is G-d.

I think the above provides a fairly level playing field. Everybody has a G-d including me. You may not agree with my priority, but don't deny you have one of your own!!! This is pretty close to the comment by Stormbabe and that comment by vote was not proving popular.

I have found by questions I ask that that humanists and atheists don't want to accept that they have a belief system. Many are, in the final analysis, nothing but intellectual snobs, or in total denial, and from that position claim total truth for their beliefs.
Guess what? No better then the most ignorant Christian!!.

Let me close before I really get started. Good question. Keep the guy at work as a friend. Sounds like "real people" regardless of what he believes right now.

Gnosticism is about knowing or having knowledge of. When one says they're 'agnostic' they generally mean that they don't know if a god exists or not and so withhold an answer as to their belief in one.

Atheism has nothing to do with gnosticism. An atheist is one who lacks a belief in a god or gods. For them, there simply isn't enough evidence to support the claim of a deity or deities existing. Therefore they don't believe.

I personally am an agnostic-atheist. I can't have absolute knowledge about everything in the universe therefore I cannot say unequivocally that there is no such thing as god or gods, but the sheer lack of evidence in support of one, makes it impossible for me to believe the claim that such a thing exists.

Under my definition of an Athiest you have NOTHING and NO ONE ABOVE YOU, thus you have the potential to be a very good or very evil person. Ying or yang. I view CRIMIANLS, rapists, muderders as fitting this motiff, for they fear nothing, they have no regrets, they don't think in terms of heaven or hell, they just think of themselves and their own needs.

THEY are GOD.

That is an Utimate Athiest, one who knows all, is all and has NO NEED in any other belief system.

The MOMENT you become subserviant to ANY system, you cease to be a true Atheist and become a "beleiver" in something.

It doesn't matter what you beleive. Part of that belief is that SOMETHING or SOMEONE is above you and you must FEAR them or else the man comes and takes you away!

The moment you have fear, you have created HEAVEN and HELL in your own mind.

You are then religious.

Good. Evil. Reward. Punishment.

That is a belief system. It can be a religion. It can be a philosophy. It can be a politically correct system of social behavior.

You AKNOWLEDGE there are RULES that YOU didn't make up, but were made up by others and YOU must follow them.

You AKNOWLEDGE a SUPERIOR being who confronts you and can make your life hell if they want to officially.

Atheist is not believing in a supreme being. Well, why do we call it the Supreme Court, then?!

YOu chose NOT to beleive in the Supreme Court, then you go against society.

What do we call people who go against society?

We call them criminals.

If you believe in a Supreme Court, then you believe in an ULTIMATE TRIBUNAL.

Theists think of GOD that way.

Catch 22.

YOu can say I'm playing with words, but it's true. You make your mother God, your wife God, your policeman God, your Judges God.

No matter how you face it, you have accepted something or someone ABOVE YOU and you are thus subserviant.

And you live in constant fear of hell, fire and brimstone.

It's called the Big House.

You go there for having too much pot.

You go there for driving your car drunk and killing someone.

You go there for being too angry at your wife when she leaves you and takes the kids with her.

Athiest - a person that does NOT believe in ANY deity or higher power. I have known several over the years....

Agnostic - acknowleged that there may be something beyond humanity but dies not believe that it can be known or understood by mankind. Known a few of them as well...

According the the definition used by the US government Athiesm is classified as a religion. It is defined by them as, "Ther religion of religiously practicing non-religion." That definition can be used to claim that since athiesm is a religion that athiests are as religious as others. I don't buy that idea...can't see how any reasonable person could.

Yes, there are athiests becaue the athiests believe themselves to be athiests. Its that simple.

Agnostics have not seen enough evidence to make a decision one way or another about the existence of a God. They are open to the possibility, but need proof.

Atheists say there is no god, period.

Big difference.

Bull f*xking sh*t. Who the f*ck is typing this right now? Huh? Who the f*ck is typing this?

By the way, your freind is a f*cking jerk. Most agnostics are fine, but every so often you get an agnostic who inexplicably claims to have the "correct position" even though their position is that they don't even know! How it it possible to be right if you're not even sure about it???!!!

Being an atheist is not the opposite than a christian. Not either being agnostic.

Whoever told you that has no idea what they are talking about. Seems like that person is confused as to what they are themselves.
