i work with the elderly and there are many things i can suggest to you. The one thing they love to do is tell stories about their past and about their lives. listening is so important to them...many of them have no one left to talk to, ya know. Also taking them out on a drive to just "get out" really makes their day. I do crafts with them, play cards, take them shopping and out to eat. Tell them that they are special...Elderly people are walking encyclopedias if you let them tell their stories. I have leanred so much about the war, depression, tough times, how to make money stretch, the real meaning of love, loosing a spouse, they are just incredible people to listen to. Good luck and good for you that you want to do something for the elderly. You will be repaid in the same way someday!

There's a lot you can do. If you want to help many elderly people, try volunteering at a nursing home. If you have an idea in your mind, like reading to them or just talking, call a nursing home around you and tell them what you want to do and they'll tell you what you need to do.
If you see an elderly person and want to help them (like a neighbor) just ask. Most elderly people would love the help around the house or shopping.
Think about taking an ad out in the paper. Put in there that you are looking to Volunteer to help an elderly couple doing errands or whatever. There's a lot you can do, you just need to have a starting point and remember to stay dedicated to the commitment.

in what way are you wanting to do something for them.,
if you mean the older people who are in nursing homes if you contact a nursing home you may be able to volunteer to help out there going on trips with them say to a mall and pushing a wheel chair and just walking along with them and insuring they all get back on the bus that sort of thing
at home you sure could help out by shoveling there walks for them for free that is really important. other jobs that you could do would be for a person who is at home but maybe not up to really walking there dog enough is do that walk the dog
visit them
and most important of all listen to them and don't treat them like there too old to be of any use . they have a life time of knowledge and its worth it to pay attention to them when they speak sometimes they can be really funny too
the other thing you can do is this don't lump them all together as the old folks or whatever they are just like everyone else some are nice and some are jerks . some wise and some not so wise
but in the end i think it would be hard not to have manage to gain some wisdom and make it past 65 or 70 years of age

Hello!
That's wonderful that you are planning on helping elderly individuals! No matter what you do to help, you will be making a fundamental difference in each person's life!
There are so many lonely people in this world and if you are just there to listen and talk to each person, you will make their day!
It is so sorrowful to know that there are many elderly people sitting in nursing homes all day with no one to visit them! You can do many activities such as: playing a musical instrument for them, reading books, going for walks with them, listening and chatting, bringing them flowers, putting in a movie for them to watch, playing cards with them, making them a meal or snack, shopping for items they need, showing them pictures of your family or pets, singing songs, drawing or painting, cleaning up in their residence, taking them for a ride somewhere (if you drive), accompanying them to the library to read, writing or mailing letters for them, watching their grandchildren, reading poems, or just being there when they are feeling lonesome! The list can be endless!
I wish you the best! You may find a very special friend out there! God Bless.

Respect them, listen to them & accept them as they are. Elderly people are nothing but aged kids. They look upon us for social, imotinal & sometimes financial security. Provide them & make our own future old age secure. Because you get the fruits the way you seed them.
