adolescents engage in this type of behavior either due to peer pressure, their age, lack of knowledge, rebellion, self esteem etc. alot of this is just part of their growing up. the biggest threat to health is aids. the best way to minimize this participation is education, education and more education this should start with the parents of the child. if he or she are informed of risky behavior,in any form, and are told the consequences of their actions then they can make a more informative decisions for their life.

health compromising behaviors could include watching TV, blasting your ears with earphones, eating fast food, stinkin' thinkin', eating lettuce and spinach, crossing the street, going to school and the list goes on and on... it's not just the heavy duty stuff like drugs that can have a lasting impact or ripple effect... we need to safeguard against the onslaught of life in "supersize me" America today...

as to the behaviors that parents might find objectionable... drinking, drugging, cutting... for the most part, those kids are self medicating past some pain... psych drugs are SOOO not the answer though... they need to be able to work through that pain safely with someone they trust... we are the result of our experience... some kids who may even have led idyllic (at least to the nekkid eye) childhoods may be suffering from some past trauma that they are trying to escape....

otherwise, often behaviors are just kids exercising their independence and individuality... this too shall pass and when they are your age, they will be asking this question about their teens as well

remember, insanity is hereditary... you get it from your kids :)

drugs, body piercing, tatoos, sex, and tricks on any form of transportation.... body piercing and tatoos to most parents are not ok... but if you are open minded and accepts your child's unique view of his body try to minimize the infection the he may get. tricks on any form of trans portation pose a risk but accidents do happen. it cannot be helped. choices of adolescents are more influenced by friends than by parents. they do things not because they thought of it first but because they are influenced by what's IN, by the media and by their pals. bear in mind that your child will be a child... we all have passed that stage and the best way to guide him is to be there and tell him that his actions have consequences and that whatever those consequences are... he must accept them because that is what will prepare him in adulthood.

drugs, self mutilation, and trying stupid tricks on things like bikes, motor cycles, skates, skate boards, surfboards, cars and other things, keep them away from other kids, or better yet, teach them as well as you can from infancy how important they are to you, so that they wont want to hurt your feelings by hurting themselves.
