Arthur C Clarke, I believe, wrote a wonderful short story called "The Star" you should check it out if you can. It does pertain to your question as well.

Last time I checked, people other than Christians could see the stars.
Since scientists don't know what a star actually is, they can't say for sure. They assume they are like the sun, but we have never had the technology to prove that.
The bible says that stars were created for signs. So, the people who try and tell horoscopes are on to something. However, I believe that the wisdom on how to read the stars was lost sometime after the flood of Noah.
I beleive that God taught Adam all that he needed to know and that wisdom was passed on through the generations until everyone was wiped out except Noah.
And, if Noah was able to pass on any of that knowledge, it was mostly wiped out during the dark ages.
Something is still used though...Before GPS, people used the stars for navigation. So, if that was the sole intent of the stars or if there is more to them, I don't think we'll ever know.

Stars can mean many things to many people.
For example, I like to look at stars as portholes or windows to the past. If we were actually able to look through the beam of light that is reaching us as at this very moment, wouldn't we not be looking into the past? Reason being, if light from a particular star has taken 1000 years to reach us here on Earth, we would therefore be looking into the past a 1000 years.
Stars are cool no matter how you look at them.

The scriptures seem to indicate a much greater meaning than just pretty lights in the sky. Besides the navigational advantages, Job has something to say about them...

"...and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years..."
They were created to have meaning. The stars can help tell time (the positions can tell what season it is), and stars have been used of God to predict events (the bright star telling of Christ's birth). I believe, though, that the stars were also created for our enjoyment. God likes to make things for us.

they were made for marking seasons and times in Genesis
they also remind of of the inifity of God his awesome power and glory
they remind us of His wrath...they are after all more like the lake of fire than we care to think
in the end... the universe was not made to make much of me, it was to make much of God see lyrics for Much of YOu by Steven Curtiss chapman
How could I stand here
And watch the sun rise
Follow the mountains
Where they touch the sky
Ponder the vastness
And the depths of the sea
And think for a moment
The point of it all was to make much of me
Cause I'm just a whisper
And You are the thunder

The stars are actually distant "suns."
Current astronomy have been disovering planets arounds these suns as well.
That would make them with meaning, to science.

*blink* The stars are great balls of gas around which planets revolve. They aren't just pretty lights and there's no meaning more than that.

They were not created for us. But we can appreciate the stars anyway.
