Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji Kodak & maybe Sony (Sony will probably cost more) all have decent entry level digicams that will take pretty good snaps if you read the manual and use common care in composing and executing.
Canon is probably considered by most people and reviewers to have the edge.
Go to dpreview or stevesdigicams to read thorough reviews and comparisons on many different cameras.

I'd get a Canon Powershot A430. http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html mentions this in the "entry level" recommendations and you can go their to read the review and see why.
