Literally, a missing of the mark, according to the Hebrew and Greek Bible texts. God himself sets the “mark” that his intelligent creatures are to reach. Missing that mark is sin, which is also unrighteousness, or lawlessness. (Rom. 3:23) Sin is anything not in harmony with God’s personality, standards, ways, and will, all of which are holy. It may involve wrong conduct, failure to do what should be done, ungodly speech, unclean thoughts, or desires or motives that are selfish. The Bible differentiates between inherited sin and willful sin, between an act of sin over which a person is repentant and the practice of sin.
Anything not in harmony with, hence contrary to, God’s personality, standards, ways, and will; anything marring one’s relationship with God. It may be in word, in deed (doing wrong acts or failing to do what should be done, or in mind or heart attitude . Lack of faith in God is a major sin, showing, as it does, distrust of him or lack of confidence in his ability to perform.

You actually know the answer, because God gave you a conscience. Sin, is doing things that will hurt youself or your fellow man. The worst sin is to reject Christ, that is the unpardonable sin you may hear Christians talk about. Its the worst because every other sin can be forgiven by God, except that one. If you love God and your fellow man and ask God to forgive you when you know in your heart you have done wrong, then you will live a life of value and be a good soul God Bless you and hope your life is the best

Sinning is everything against God's will. Stealing is sin, cheating on a test is sin, being angry is a sin, worshiping anything other than God is a sin, little white lies are sins . . . the list goes on and on and on. Thinking something bad is sinning, as well as acting on those thoughts. We can't control all of our sin, but Jesus died because of it. If we accept Jesus as our personal savior, then our sin is forgiven and we can go to heaven!

I like the acrostic of sin as a "Spiritual Interference Network"
It appears when you take the Bible in total that there are two things God is looking for from us in our life on earth. Loving God willingly and joyfully and Loving what God has created including ourselves. Paul in his first letter to Corinth does a great job at defining Godly love;
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1Cor. 13:4-7
Sin then would be anything that is other than love as defined above inregards to God, ourselves or others.

The literal meaning is an archery term, meaning to miss the mark. Or to miss the target.
When you sin, you miss the mark.

Sin is simply disobeying Gods word.
That encompasses us all to varying degrees, but to God, sin is sin.
If you truely do not believe in God, then sin would have no meaning at all, as it is a term for a believer only.

something done to hurt someone else. the bible says its a sin to hold food back from those who are hungry, but not one to steal to feed your family. obviously, the nature of sin is in the intent of the action

Anything that is NOT pleasing to the Lord is sin.
That is why we are all sinners.
