My best friend is breasstfeeding a newborn baby and she would like a tattoo. We have read alot about the topic and everything is so controversial on whether or not it is actually safe. I would appreciate any input on this.

Both have nothing to do with each other. Go ahead with breast feeding, but at the time of feeding one should concentrate in the baby, so that psychologically there is a harmony built between the mother and the child. It has inherent special meaning in influencing the psyche of the child that ultimately becomes base of his character and conduct.

(first off, HOW newborn?)

Alright, this might depend on the artist that does it. Most will not tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding woman. A worry about getting tattooed by breastfeesing is that the transference frm the mother to her milk to the baby. First off, the general consensus says to wait at LEAST 3 months before getting a body modifications, in order to et your body heal and get back to "normal".

A risk if she is NOT very choosy in a clean and sterile artist is if the mother was to get a tattoo, and contract a disease or illness it could be given to the baby through the breastmilk, and also, if the mother develops an infection from the tattoo, it can contaminate and harm the baby. Infection can be avoided with a proper artist, and if SHE follows the aftercare instructions PERFECTLY. Also consider of the possible things in tattoo inks. They are all foreign products, some even with iron or things that would be very unhealthy and damaging to the baby that the mother could give to her baby. those are just risks.. She should take those into consideration.

Most reccomend waiting; why take the chance?

It's not suggested until after 3 months, period. So after that then she could try and find an artist in the area. Many artists will not touch her,(in some shop agreements, you agree to not be pregnant or nursing for example) just because they're not willing to take the risk, but if you find one that would consider doing it, call them up and talk to them, ask questions, all of the questions, thoughts and concerns that you can think of...

She should be informed of those things, but she should be fine to get body modifications after the suggested time!

Miss Murder is correct.

The immune system is already compromised immediately following pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Healing a tattoo or piercing requires a good portion of your body's immune system in order to ward off infection. As your friend is transmitting valuable antibodies from her body to her baby's, it would not be in her best interest (or the child's) to get a tattoo at any time while breastfeeding. If the tattoo were to become infected for some reason, the child would be put at risk and your friend would be, as well.

Have your friend use this valuable time to bond with her new child. She has the rest of her life to get a tattoo. After she has decided to stop breastfeeding the kiddo... she'll be good to go! :)

It is better to wait. What if your friend gets infected with hepatitis or tetanus? Is it really that critical for her to get the tattoo right now? She won't be breastfeeding forever.

Here is another thought. Does she know that she cannot be an organ or blood donor for 12 months if she gets a tattoo? I am a mother, too, and for that particular reason I would not get a tattoo right now. I would simply feel horrible if something happened, and my child needed a transplant, and in spite of being a perfectly compatible donor I would not be able to help. I know, I know, the risk is very low, but what if...?
I have nothing against tattoos in general; I have one myself, but it was done a few years back, before I started my family.

I do not know the professional answer to this, but I would say no. Everything that you do while nursing effects "everything" in some way or another. We just don't know how. I would say to wait awhile just to be safe...I am sure she wouldn't want anything to happen because of something little like a tattoo.

I would say it is better to wait. The baby's health is the most important thing, and she obviously has the child's health in mind since she is nursing. So bond with your baby and come up with a great tattoo design to get when you wean!

i think its gonna be unsafe coz the ink from the tattoo will enter blood and then it can go to the milk and ruin the nutients in the milk so dat might cause the baby harm so she might wanna wait till she stops breastfeeding

I am sure about this but from my stand point on this I think she should wait until she is done breast feeding. Just to be on the safe side.
