Well a short story normally is no more than 20,000 words so I'd say a novel is more than that.

A novel is a work of fiction which can be of any length. I have read novels that ran under 200 pages and others that ran over 1000. It only depends on how much space the author needs to tell his tale.

A novel is (usually) at least 100,000 words start to finish, and is a work of fiction. Anything under that is considered a novella.
Pick a book you like and count the words on one page and then multiply it by the number of pages in the book - there you go!
