Avoid bright white atheltic shoes (think Nike air). These automatically make anyone look like an American Tourist.

And as mentioned earlier, do not wear anything above the knees or that shows the shoulder or chest if you plan on going into any churches. I found that a nice peasant's skirt or capri pants and a tank were great and I'd put a sweater or track jacket on when we walked in.

You will always look like a tourist unless you speak fluent Italian with no accent. Natives of a country can always detect tourist, so don't even try, its a waste of money and energy. I would not go in shorts or a halter, the Italian men (like all men in the Mediterranean) ogle, whisper naughty offers, try to touch, so try to dress in such a way as not to draw too much unsolicited approaches. You need a hat if you go in summer. Enjoy and don't worry, being a tourist has its advantages.

oghma...
why u say "don't shave your underarms"?
where do u think Cameron is going to go?
surely u know anything 'bout italy and italians: italy is NOT "soprano" or "godfather", Italy is Valentino, Fendi, Dolce&Gabbana, Ferrè, Ferragamo, Gucci, Prada, Bulgari, (just for talking about fashion)!

Cameron, don't listen to this bullshits, u can wear how do u want as u wear in the states.

oghma2006...I took your comment as rude, please respect us! I respect you.

To wear in Italy....if sightseeing should not wear something that shows shoulders or skin above knees, you will not be allowed into churches.

Italian style differs from region to region....but some general rules are do not wear shorts, big logos, or to big clothes. Those things are not classy. Tenny shoes are not worn often so I suggest comfortable flats if walking lots...we have lots cobbled streets which heels get stuck in. Easy for Italian female casue we walk on them often but America has no cobbled streets, no?

Lots Italians wear colour black, very chic. If want Italian style mixed with American wear jeans but dress them up....sorry, my inglese not so good...I tried to help!

Have fun in Italy....most Italians love Americans! ;)
