I agree with most of the above. However:
Although 'gourmet Mexican food' might seem like an oxymoron to some people Mexico City cuisine is internationally recognized.
I had Duck in a pumpkin seed/cilantro sauce with zapote and toasted plantains that was World Class. (But that's not very common!)

Burritos, enchiladas, chalupas, quacamole, chimichangas, quesadillas, charritos, sopapillas, Mexican or Spanish rice, chili rellenos, refried beans, gordita crunches.

Cabrito al Pastor,very popular but expensive in mexico is begining to show up in the US,it's young barbeque goat.It's also a little expensive in the US but it comes usually with friloles borrachos,a salad,and in certain places home made corn tortillas
Fajitas are also great,strips of skirt steaks,the name fajitas is not from mexico but Tex Mex ,fajitas means little belts,mexico calls their version of fajitas arracheras
