Wisdom involves seeing things as they are and using that knowledge to solve problems, attain goals, avoid or avert dangers, or help others to do so. “In the Book of Proverbs,” states one reference work, “‘wisdom’ signifies skillful living, the ability to make wise choices and live successfully.”

Wisdom is a blend of many factors, including understanding, insight, shrewdness, and thinking ability.

Wisdom is the ability to put knowledge to work. (Matthew 11:19) King Solomon displayed wisdom when two women claimed the same child and he used his knowledge of a mother’s devotion to her offspring to settle the dispute. Discernment is “acuteness of judgment.” It is “the power or faculty of the mind by which it distinguishes one thing from another.”

The Biblical sense of wisdom lays emphasis on sound judgment, based on knowledge and understanding; the ability to use knowledge and understanding successfully to solve problems, avoid or avert dangers, attain certain goals, or counsel others in doing so. It is the opposite of foolishness, stupidity, and madness, with which it is often contrasted.
