I'm a nurse but I've never heard of this before.
Recently, I have tried to take Tylenol PM and Benadryl as a sleep aid. I have never had to take Benadryl before as I am very healthy, do not have any allergies, and do not get sick often. However, I reacted very oddly to Benadryl- I became restless- I couldn't sit still! I felt that I didn't have any control over my body and I kept twitching. This was happening as I was trying to sleep, but I almost had a paradoxical reaction and was kept wide awake! What kind of reaction would you call this; and has anyone ever heard of this before (esp Medical people?) Help! Any other information would be greatly appreciated!

Just another detail: I am not taking Benadryl and Tylenol PM together- I tried each seperately- both with the same effect. Never more than 25mg.

Agitation, nervousness, excitability, not able to sleep, and seizures are some of the possible adverse reactions to Benadryl which are closely related to what you had been through. You need to be careful and watchful as your signs may lead to seizures. Benadryl has been associated with seizures as its rare adverse reaction.♥

Paradoxical Reaction Benadryl

Just to be clear...Tylenol PM contains benadryl, so don't take it with additional benadryl. But, yes, some people have a paradoxical reaction to benadryl (generic name is diphenhdramine). I've seen it in elderly patients and children. Some of my friends my age (20s) have the same problem you do. Maybe try a half dose. If you still have problems, don't keep using it. Be careful trying other over the counter sleep aids as they all usually are just benadryl (or its the main component). See your doctor about a prescription sleep aid and let him/her know about your difficulties sleeping and reaction to diphenhydramine. They should be able to help you out.

RE: If I get a severe allergic reaction, will simple Benadryl help? I have debilitating anxiety, and I was prescribed a new medicine for an unrelated condition. I did research on the pill before I took it, and I read about how it can cause severe allergic reactions. I'm always reluctant to take new medicines or try new foods in fear that I'll develop a...

I have had several patients tell me that benadryl ( and for that matter other antihistamines) have made them restless instead of sleepy....it would certainly be a paradoxical response to a sedative antihistamine..theoretically if your preperation had a decongestant ( usually a ephedrine deravative) that would account for the increased state of alertness.....maybe even restlessness.
It is not an 'allergic reaction' because by definition an allergic reaction is a hypersensitivity reaction (Type 1-4) which are immune mediated and dont manifest in this way.
Dystonia is an extrapyramidal effect with medications especially the old gen. antipsychotics which would be treated with an anticholinergic agent like benadryl...so no benadryl would not cause dystonia...and your symptom is certainly not dystonia either.

Maybe it's a rebound effect of the drug due to overmedicaion.
