A shortage of bodies, standards lowered to what I feel are dangerous levels to accomodate those who shouldn't be in, potential war with Iran and North Korea, overworked reservists.

As long as we can meet staffing through voluntary service, we should not have a draft. A draft should only become a consideration if our Country faced a recruitment crisis that jeopardizes our security. There are many things that can be done before resorting to a draft including paying our service people a salary that reflects the job they do. Making shorter enlistment periods with sign on bonuses. Just think if our sports figures get ridiculous sign on bonuses, why can't the US government provide something for those who volunteer to serve in harm's way, like say $10,000 to $20,000 up front pay. Just a thought, but I can't possibly see a draft in our future, other than that nice cold lager I like from Old Dominion Brewing Company in Ashburn VA.

we should have a draft in the future for the same reasons we have had one in the past, if we get involved in a war that we are not prepared for and dont have enough troops to fight it. Im not pro-draft but if we need the men to protect freedom in america(such as a world war 3) i think it would be the wisest decision.

It is people like "mmd" that will most likely contribute to the downfall of American society, but then again who is to say.

There will most likely only be a World War III if the United States initiates one. And a military draft that ignores the wishes of the draftee is a criminal action in my oppinion. You have countless individuals who do not even believe in warfare and who are scared to death of being in Iraq and getting killed.
Time itself has shown that people are not afraid to die for what they believe in. If the leaders of a society do an excellent job in both helping to create something great, as well as convincing the general public that what they have before them is worth defending and dying for, people will defend their homeland without question. But if you have massive amounts of people who dont even believe in what they are fighting for, no, they will not be interested in dying. Keep in mind that during this war we havnt been ****ing DEFENDING anything at all, we have invaded a country that had absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks in the first place.
If people do not wish to take the shape of a warrior and battle for a cause, obviously the cause is meaningless. People WILL die for what they believe in, if you give them the chance to. But if you just repeatedly tell them that they need to go die in service of their little country, that is criminal in itself.
America is outstanding in comparison to other countries on this globe. But I personally believe that we need to take it easy on invading other countries based on our leaders own paranoia.
There were a number of flights cleared by the highest level of government security on 9/11 that suppossedly flew the Bin Laden family out of the country. Now naturally there is going to be information discrediting this piece of information or twisting it, but it is the truth. Now wait a second, arent those the people we've been looking for over the past several years? Arent young men and women being slaughtered during their search for these people? Just like John Kerry IMPLIED, the men and women in Iraq are uneducated, although I seriously admire their character, and desire to do well(or unwell depending on why they are murdering people).
Dont be another chesspiece or a dot on a statistical graph. Fight for what YOU believe in, not for what your told to believe in. Americans commonly believe in freedom and will die on their homeland for this cause including myself.

We shouldn't, if we can help it. And now that the democrats have congress, i highly doubt that we will be in the middle east much longer, much less have a draft.
