For Chiangmai, depends on what you want to do there. If you want to be close to amenities in the town, there are many hotels and guesthouses around the main town of Chiangmai. Even boutique one. Price ranges from US$15 up. You can easily walk in and find a place or location you like, near the Ping River or near to the night market, or near the shopping centres.

If you like nature, there are mountain and riverside resorts and hotels in the nearby sub-districts. You will surely get plenty of privacy. Look for places in MAe Sa, Mae Ai, Chiang Dao, Mae Rim, etc. These will provide you with a cosy feel.

As for Koh Samui, it is an island so most resorts and hotels are in the same locale. Near the beach. The price do vary from place to place, so will have to depend on your need.
