i own a repair shop, and its not that hard to do you need to locate a good motor and transmission, and then the rest of it is small stuff like mounts and exhaust and you,ll also need a set of springs from a v-8 for the front the rear ones will be ok,a radiator and all the linkage also once you find all of it ,its just a matter of putting it all together and making it work it will take some time to do ,but if you have something else to drive, and can do it as a hobby it should go pretty easy ,i have done it before ,and its not that bad to do,once the motor and tranny is in it,the rest is just hooking things up on it,good luck i hope this help,s.

You need to get a 5.9 engine, a transmission from an R/T or something similar, you'll need the wiring harness, the PCM from a dakota R/T, You'll need new shocks up front to adjust for the new weight of the new bigger heavier engine. Its actually alot easier just to go out and buy a used R/T. I was thinkin about doing the same thing with my 3.9 Dakota but decided just to get an R/T. Which i am actually going to pick up TODAY. If ur still intested in doing a swap, go to dodgedakotas.com and do a search through the archives or go to dakotadurango.com and do the same thing there. Good Luck.

Don't do it. It is alot of work. 25 years ago it was easier, but, with todays modern electrics you'll have to change out the wiring harness for the computor and other engine hookups. Not to mention suspension, exhaust and engine cooling system changes. If you want to go faster just buy a faster truck. Of course, now that the election is over gas prices will be going up again so you might just as well stick with the 4 cylinder.

the only way to do this without being a complete moron is: sell the 01, buy an 82. you will have enough money to go better than 360. why not throw a 426 hemi in there... it is not ever a good idea to switch an electronically controlled engine ever. sometimes, in a few rare cases its not retarded but its never a good idea. go buy an 80 and then you wont have to make the Countless sacrifices. you have a dream, a picture in your head. each time you encounter a problem and have to change your idea you will be that much farther from what you wanted and odds are by the time you've made all those sacrifices the end result just wont justify the effort(and money, if that's an object to you) it took to build it. now if money is no object to you, find a reputable custom race shop in your area and give them your credit card.

big bucks and many problems...you are better off to sell that one and just buy what you want. The computer is the first thing to come to mind...it won't work with the 360...so there is one expense...a big one. next is the wiring...you don't want to go there talking a new wiring harness. Then engine mounts and tranny hook up...it's not even worth it...buy what you want and you'll be way ahead.
