is a man without faith braver than a man with faith.

the question is not are both men brave. no. that is a terribly...very very VERY boring and dull answer dont you tihnk? so unsatisfying for me.

dont answer with "they are both brave" because that is not in question. yes, they are both brave men.

if one man who is a christian and believes that when he dies he is going to heaven throws himself on a grenade to save his friends. and another man who is an atheist throws himself on a grenade to save his friends but believes he is giving away the only life he will ever have. is the atheist braver than the christian?

i think yes, he is. because it takes a hell of a lot more bravery to give away youre only life than to take the expressway to an eternity in heaven.

lol i am starving for a good answer. my intelectual blood sugars are low.

okay they are just all sitting around in a circle and throwing a grenade in the middle for fun. ...this is like in a combat situation. many many many athiests have done similiar acts.

second...it would MATTER TO THE ATHIEST BECAUSE HE IS GIVING AWAY HIS LIFE! HIS ONE AND ONLY LIFE! MEANWHILE THE CHRISTIAN BELIEVES THAT HE IS GOING TO SPEND AN ETERNITY IN HEAVEN!!!

how hard is this to grasp? wouldnt you think that the atheist might considor his one and only life (which he loves exactly and equally as much as the christian(lets just imagine that atheists can do that for pretend)) to be precious?

good answer matt, and not just cause you agree with me. i hadnt even thought of the christian thinking of alterior motives...just the fact that the christian thought he was going to heaven

It can be successfully argues that they are equally brave because the Christian is counting on his faith rather than a known truth. That places him in the same category with the atheist. Greater love hath no other man , than he who'd lay his life down for his friends.

It isn't a question about bravery at all--it's a question about who is more realistic--the person who has faith and thinks there is a supreme being because he or she was taught this by someone who has exactly the same objective experiences as this person? or, the person who realizes the facts as experienced and is not so superstitious as to believe that creation had to be originated by a man-made god, made in man's image, male, not female, able to leap tall buildings at a single bound, and able to input the actions of billions of us simultaneously, know our futures, simultaneously, and hear our prayers, most of which ask for things. How can god process this and still be human-like, a father?

i'm trying to think why on earth an atheist would do that? thats like suicide really isn't it? or are they depressed & they just want a reason to die? from the christian perspective, the christian thinks they will see thier loved ones in heaven Anyways (ones that are saved). i just dont see an atheist doing this. so my answer is they're both brave, but maybe the christian is a little more sane :o}

the atheist is braver because he doesnt have an alterior motive to sacrifice his life.

to nikki: why wouldnt a atheist sacrifice his life to save another? we don't need the promise of a "heaven " to do good deeds in this life.

The atheist doesn't believe in an after life so it doesn't matter to him one way or another.
