It seems it once did mean: to teach Christ-ianity, with Christ thereof being the end of the law: Romans 10:4, the Saviour of the world: John 4:42. But lately it seems to be hijacked by and associated with unthinking neo-fund-amentalists who law impute sin and death for the hell of it, not to mention for the money.

Does anyone have info on the meaning of Evangelical, besides what those who now call themselves Evangelicals represent?

You are absolutely correct. It originates from the four Gospels of the New Testament. But now it is reduced to preaching for conversion of the poor and the uneducated to Christianity by obviously spending money and employing persons on regular basis to run these conversions by alluring needy people. It is a religious industry in India by German Evangelical Churches.
