if i remember correctly, we all go through different fixations when we grow. like the oral (thumbsucking), anal (toddlers scratching their butts) and sexual fixations like touching your organs. It shouldn't be such a big deal. she's just starting to discover her body. and unless you suspect that she had been abused or molested or something, no need to seek professional help.

It is not inappropiate for a child to be doing this at that age. She is still exploring her body. If you haven't talked to your child about sexuality, you should. That should've been started when they were 2. Make sure you use the real terms and not those made up ones. The real terms are the best. Explain to her what she is doing and why. Remember, masturbation is not wrong and people should not be ashamed of it. Just make sure you tell her that masturbation is something she should do in private. She also could be learning things from her peers and media. Take notice of her friends and what she sees on tv, movies, ads, and video games.

Hey, uh, I am not aware of a single verse in the Bible that prohibits this act, so I don't know why we're getting the Puritan Power Slap... Fact: It is healthy. Fiction: You will be discommunicated from your god and will ruin yourself before marriage. To put it in perspective, I am relatively sure that, if Jesus was indeed the same as the rest of us, at least anatomically, he had wet dreams too. Back on topic: If you feel bad about it, don't do it. Your mind can guilt you into actually becoming sick.

It's normal what she is doing and sounds like she needs the talk about her body and puberty. She's 9 so she may be starting her period in the next year or so anyway so she's definitly at the age to just explain puberty. The actual sex talk can wait until she's older.

If your really worried about her go to a book store and find an age appropriate book about puberty and sexuality. You can just place it in a room where she will "discover" this book. It can help her understand why she is having these urges and that there is nothing wrong with her. Also make sure that she isn't being exposed to inappropriate sexual material from someone else. For example could she have seen sexual material online at home or a friends house?

I wouldnt take her to the doctor. Just sit her down and explain that there is nothing wrong with what she is doing but its a private thing and she should keep it to her room or the bathroom. Its not something you do when other people can see you. Also talk to her about sex if you havent allready.

Um please don't take her to the doctor... that would embarrass her so much.... to be honest I was around this age when I started this behavior and I am now 36 and I think I turned out ok.... if you are really concerned please sit her down and talk to her. I think the doctor will just really make her embarrassed. Everyone developes at different rates.

while you have the right to feel that way, it is normal for her to discover her body and there is no set age for when she will start. Take her to the family doctor if you want and it might be time for the "talk" even though she is so young, they grow up faster than we like huh.

Ask her. It is important to establish trust and keep the lines of communication open. You want her to develope the habit of coming to you with concerns and comfortable when she does. You are her mother, not her friend.
