I think it would be a good idea for a child that age to have one if they are responsible and are not prone to loosing the phone. You can get phones with pre-paid minutes so you do not have to worry about them racking up a lot of minutes. It could actually save a kid's life if they are in a sticky situation or stranded somewhere...

When they're old enough to get a job and pay for the cell phone. So, yes. 12 or 13 is too young.

Well thier are many things to look at such as responsibility.
You have to ask yourself if your child is responsible enough to use the phone only when needed and not go over thier monthly minutes.
Another thing is if they deserve the cell phone. Do they help around the house and behave.
My sister just turned 15 and she wants a cell phone for her Birthday which will be celebrated on Saturday and my mother said the only way she was going t get her one is is she acted responsible and did not go over her monthly minutes and did what she was suppose to such as taking out the trash and putting dishes away. I do not know if my mom got her a cell or not, i guess I will find out Saturday.

kids are old enough when you consider them to be responsible, mobile phones are a great way for you and your children to keep in constant contact, it the age of 13 kids become very social and spend more time out of the house so you would have piece of mind that you would know where your child was. if your worried about them running up a bill, just go with a prepaid phone where you control the amount they spend. good luck.

no...not at all. actually, if the child knows how to use one, give him one. of course for emergencies only! you never know now a days what, when , and who the child is doing and with whom. i think that it is a great idea that every child who knows how to use one should have one just in case. nothing wrong with knowing where he is at any given time. now, if it's for a pleasure purpose, than....maybe. i think that the phone should be put to usage to parents only (calling). my oldest son is 12 and last Christmas we got him a cell phone. it is a pre-paid one, so when the minutes are gone, that's it until he earns enough money to buy a top-up card a seven eleven. this teaches him responsibility, and to use his minutes wisely. like not talking to a buddy of his at home on the cell instead of on the house phone. then , after he showed responsibility, he got one through his dad and i.

Depends if you have the need for it. I didn't get my 15 yr old a phone until just last year to keep in touch with her. She has a prepaid acct and the phone is just for emergencies not for her to be yakking to her friends. Now that she has a job, I won't be refilling the minutes and she can yak all she wants.
My 10 yr old has a prepaid phone as well, the Firefly. It's just for me to keep track of him when he goes outside or to football practice. Instead of depending on coming in by curfew, I call him. I don't wonder where he is and he doesn't get in trouble.
So, again, your need and age determine whether you should get a cell phone.

I think the age doesn't matter as much as the maturity. If your kid is responsible and is mature enough to pay some of the bill they should be allowed a cell phone.

My son is only 5 years old but...I feel that by the time that he is 10 years we will be getting one for him. My husband and I only have cell phones...we don't have a landline. When he leaves the house he will take the phone with him for emergency situations.

No. Any time a child can spend long hours away from home, a cell phone can be a life saver. There are options parents can do, such as limiting to whom a call may be made from. Perhaps only to home, the police, some of the child's friends. But with all the nuts out there, I want my child to have a means of getting in touch with me or, just as important, me getting in touch with them.
