POSSIBLE is the question:

1000 possible area code in the North American Numbering plan (includes 000)
1000 (includes 000) Possible exchanges in each area code in the North American Numbering plan
10000 (includes 0000) Possible numbers in each exchange in the North American Numbering plan

To find out how many numbers there are POSSIBLE you would multiply: 1000 * 1000 * 10,000 = 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) POSSIBLE numbers in the North American Numbering Plan. you now have to take away the reserved numbers like 911,411,311,555---And a host of others in each small and large telephone company. This number is still very close to being 10 Billion POSSIBLE phone numbers.

A plan is or was underway to either expand the area code or exchange system of numbers (or both) If either is expanded it would further allow more numbers (increasing the amount of available numbers by 1000 fold each.(add 3 more zeros to the billion for the area code and another 3 zeros for the exchange if they were to expand the system--10,000 *10,000 * 10,000 for a total of 1,000,000,000,000 (TRILLION) POSSIBLE numbers with the proposed expansion of the current numbering plan

well, each phone number is 10 digits... are you looking at just residential ones, or including 1-800 and 1-900 numbers? anyway, to find it you multiply the possible amount of numbers for each position. The first digit is always a 1, so that doesn't affect the amount. The area code can start with any number other than zero i believe, so that would be 9 possibilities, then the other two in the area code can be any of 10 digits, so there are 900 possibilities just for the area code. Continue multiplying for the first 3 digits and the last 4 and that will give you the total possible numbers.

It's a simple probability rule.

there are ten digits in a phone number, and ten possible numbers (0-9). I would say 10,000,000,000 possible, but they are not all valid. No one has a phone # (000)000-0000, (000)000-0001 etc.

Definitely no more than ten billion, though.

How is one suppose to know that? I know there is a lot since the States are huge, other than that, not a clue.
