I was wondering if using mouthwash after brushing teeth would wash away the toothpaste's benefits like tartar & plaque protection, sensitivity protection, etc., especially when a toothpaste advertises 12 hour protection. I realize one could simply use mouthwash before brushing but is that necessary?

Skip the mouthwash altogether. It's more important that you have the toothpaste as the last stuff in your mouth. Nearly all mouthwashes out there have insignificant effects.
As an added suggestion, only spit out the paste after brushing, and don't even rinse out with water. Allows the paste even more time against your teeth.

If you want to be really through, try this sequence:
1. First, use sugar-free chewing gum to get big loose particles out of your mouth.
2. Then, use dental floss to get out particles that are stuck between teeth.
3. Then, use a strong mouthwash to rinse out anything still let.
4. Then brush thoroughly, preferably with a flouride toothpaste and a circular rotating elecric toothbrush which probably will do a better job along the gumlines than you can do with an old-fashioned toothbrush.
5. Finally, finish off with a flouride-based rinse (like ACT), which will leave a protective coating over your teeth.

It's a lot of work, but it's a good way to clean your teeth and gums. Also, dental problems can cause problems in other parts of your body, from diabetes to heart trouble. Good dental care is worth the effort.

And, of course, see a dentist regularly. They often are the first medical professionals to spot other health problems.

FOR THE BEST ORAL CARE: 1) SCRAPE YOUR TONGUE, 2) BRUSH USING A TOOTHPASTE THAT CONTAINS TRICLOSAN(COLGATE TOTAL), AND FLOSS BETWEEN ALL YOUR TEETH (TO PREVENT CAVITIES BETWEEN YOUR TEETH). YOU CAN ALSO ADD IRRIGATION AFTER YOU FLOSS WITH AN ORAL IRRIGATOR (WATERPIK). =O)
