I'm 19 and I've had a sore throat and been congested for a while and just recently the left side of my jaw (the inner side/tongue side) started hurting and I can feel a lump there. Any ideas what it is? It's toward the back, right below my back two teeth.

HAVING STUDIED ORAL PATHOLOGY IN DENTAL SCHOOL, THERE THINGS THAT THIS LUMP COULD BE. IT'S BEST TO SEE YOUR DENTIST AND HAVE A X-RAY OF THIS AREA IN ORDER TO RULE OUT CERTAIN CONDITIONS.

This could be nothing, a simple, harmless infection. Take vitamin c, get lots of rest, and take a couple asprin. If this doesn't go away after a few days, see your doctor or dentist. You are at the right age for your wisdom teeth to begin maturing. If this is the case, you may have a deeply impacted wisdom tooth. This can cause lots of issues.

Summary: Wait it out. Give it a few days, get some rest. If this doesn't go away, have it looked at.

Could be a cyst. Try looking in the mirror with your mouth open and tongue up. Now place your hand under your chin, press upward. Do you see the lump any better now. If so, consult your doctor.

See your dentist as soon as possible. The previous dentist was correct. It could be a pathology and the sooner you treat them the better. The only way you can know is with an examination and possibily with an x-ray.

You may have a tooth that is infected. I would try rinsing my mouth with a mild salt water several times a day. If that doesn't do the trick, you may have to see a dentist.
