I've seen two different things you could try
One is these caps you glue over your cats nails, you just trim them with the nail as it grows and that prevents damage to the furniture.
The other is there is a tape you can put where they scratch it won't hurt the furniture but will stick at their paws which they don't like and stop them from scratching.
Also make sure there's a couple scratching posts available, put some catnip on it to help tempt them to use it.

There are several ways.
1. Declaw. I consider this to be cruelty to animals.
2. Put double sided tape wherever they are scratching. They hate it when their paws get stuck.
3. Keep a spray bottle close by and spray them in the face if they start scratching. They'll start to associate scratching with getting wet and will stop doing it.
5. Put soft paws over their claws. This is what I do. It's really easy. They are tiny rubber claw covers that can be glued over their claws. They last about 6 or 8 weeks before the nails grow out and they fall off. They're really cute and they come in different colors. They're really easy to put on.

Go to wal-mart or to pet smart they make scratching posts that extend from the ceiling to the floor that fit in the corners of a room they take up very little space and cats absolutely LOVE them. Also they make these little round hollow stackable scratching posts that they can run and jump and scratch and play around they are awesome. Good luck!!

buy them a scratching post or what ever its called
they are pretty cheap
have a look in a pet shop & get some ideas & then go to a cheap shop if money is a problem
I would put some catnap in the cat scratch thingy because they go ape over catnap
also if that fails squirt a small amount of water at them when you catch them & scold them at the same time
NEVER declaw them !! how cruel is that
good luck

A scratching post and clipping their nails regularly. You can also try those scratching boxes you find in pet stores. It is corragated cardboard inside of a box that you just lay on the floor and the cat lays or sits on it and scratches away. You could also go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and find a floor mat made out of sisal and rub it with cat nip and lay that on the floor, the cats will go nuts on it and claw at that. My cats love them and never scratch at my furniture.

Build or buy them a scratching post. Cover it in catnip and when they go to scratch the furniture spritz them with water. They will soon get the idea and stick to the scratching post to scratch. You could also do this by getting carpet remnants and covering them in catnip also and letting them know that is the only thing they are allowed to scratch.

try getting them a scratching post. The big ones with the little rooms in them are good too and add a nice touch. Or you could get a cat training book at a library or something and look it up.

You can try putting plastic caps over the cats nails. that way your cat doesn't ruin your furniture. When your cat scratches the furniture her nails won't tear the furniture.
