I'm an 18 year old, with about $2,000 in the bank and I make about $1,000 a month. I live in South Florida which means no hills and mostly urban areas. What type of car do you think would be good for me based on my area, age, and income?

a bus...not to drive but to ride on. You dont have much money and live in an urban area. Its the best obvious choice.

I recommend an old BMW 318. They are relatively low maintenance and easy to service. Therefore you can take it to any respectable shadetree mechanic and pay reasonable rates for getting tuneups, brakes, etc. Get a manual transmission too. Automatics eventually die and it will set you back 2 grand to fix. Learning to drive standard is actually very easy. The hard part is getting over the intimidation factor.
You can find 95 models on E-bay for 5,000.
I have one with 360,000 miles on it. It's simple enough, I've done all the maintenance myself. I'm a computer analyst, not a mechanic. In 12 years, I've only had to change the shocks (1 time), plugs (5), distributer (2), clutch (1), battery (3), and tie rods twice.
That it makes a fashion statement that puts you in a class apart from the honda crowd is a bonus. :-)
Keep in mind that by financing the extra dough, the bank will require that you carry full comp/collision insurance.
With so little money put into the car, that part of your insurance will not be overly expensive. Once you have the car paid off, drop that part and go to liability only. At your age, insurance companies will eat you.

At this point in your life you must only buy a car that is affordable to your money ----miles per gallon are less important than the cost of repair ( if necessary) a small Chevy or a good used Toyota are safe bets...........get the dealer to give you some type of warranty or talk to an individual seller and ckeck-out the car at your friendly mechanic and trust him if he says no even if you like that car.......and be sure not to buy a flood soaked vehicle from Louisana/Katrina the insurance co's and quick dollar salesmen are pushing alot of those cars

Get a small compact car that is good on gas. I have a Honda and I just drove over 700 miles on a tank and a half. Also, with Hondas, you only need oil changes every 10,000 miles. Not to mention they will run for well over 100,000 miles.

You can't go wrong with an old civic or hatchback focus. Both great on gas, but if you want reliability, pick a japanese car :). Honda civic, toyota corolla, nissan sentra. I sold my 91 Sentra last year and it still runs great. Good luck.

You might like a motorcycle if you don't have to carry around a bunch of stuff.
Insurance is cheap, and gas costs almost nothing!
Just make sure you wear a helmet! I don't like helmets myself, but the other idiots on the road are a good reason to wear one!

Pay cash, and then make car payments to your bank account for the next five years! You will be far ahead!
