Perhaps, I don't have all the answers. It would be better to ask why God would create a being that can beat him in thumb-wrestling, rather than could.

God loves to sport with others. Sometimes He lets them win out of a loving relationship. Like a Father who lets a child win at some game out of love. SO yes if He so desires he can do anything

This is what he did for Yakov/Yisrael.
It was to build his confidence in himself.
I have done this for my sons too while younger. Now they would just about kill me if I were to try it. They're big.
