Cats do not fear water, most just don't like it. I had a cat who would jump in the shower while the water was running. I also have an out door cat that likes to be outside when it rains.

I have had multiple cats and they have all had a different response to water. I think it really depends on their personality. I had a very adventurous cat that was not afraid of a thing. Not the vacuum, not an unexpected knock on the door, not water. Nothing. He actually would jump into the tub the second I got out of the shower. So, I do not think that cats are born scared of water. Oh, and the Tiger point is a good one.

Many cats are not afraid of water - think of tigers, lions, jaguars, ocelots, and jaguarundi. They all live in hot savannas, and they like taking dips in cool, refreshing streams and ponds.

Cats from cold areas don't like the wet stuff that much. Snow leopards, lynx, bobcats, and cougars live in cold places, so they don't want to get wet. Water could make their fur less able to keep out the cold.

No cat wants to be splashed with water or dunked into a bath - cats are independent and like to do things their own way. Which is why my cat has a water fountain - she can play with the running water without fear of being submerged.

There's a fable here that might explain it:

However, I don't think that all cats are afraid of water.

After all, there are ship's cats & how could they bear being on board if they had a water phobia.

The Turkish Van cat is said to love water & to even go swimming & Bengals also like it.

Saw a brilliant little video to prove it ... here's the link for bathing Bengals:

Cats aren't scared of the water if you put them in the bag before you get to the river.

Cats are actually good swimmers and some do love water.! run a tap and watch them...they will either play or drink! >^..^<

Some enjoy it or don't mind at all and there are a couple of breeds that are known for enjoying water...the turkish angora and the turkish van are two that are known to enjoy it!

cat's are wary of it because if flicked in thier face or at them, is equal to another cat hissing (or spitting) at them.

they like to swim though, so i'm guessing as long as they decide what they do with stationary water, they're alright with it.

as soon as there is any kind of intervention (human, or otherwise),
then no-go.

cat's are big, and sometimes small
think they bloody know it all
one time i had lost my keys,
my cat, proctor, found all three
so cat's know more than we think
so don't put them in the sink
otherwise they'll fuss and hiss
and if you throw them in, you'll miss.

They remember that in medieval times their mistresses, the witches were often drowned in ponds and rivers.

I guess its just cos theyre not used to it, ive shown my kitten water.. like in a shallow bath if hes a bit stinky! And hes ok with it now.. like anythin i guess you can train them not to be frightened of it if you start early enough.
