I am trying to decide whether to get a laptop (specifically an HP laptop) installed with Windows XP Pro (more expensive and more complicated) or with Windows XP Home (less expensive and easier) then upgrading to XP Pro. Are there any problems with upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro generally and specifically on an HP laptop? Are there any deficiencies or disadvantages (other then cost) with upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro as opposed to installing XP Pro from the beginning?

Most laptops (HP included) available in stores come pre-installed with Windows XP Home. So, one question is whether to go with one of these units and upgrade to Windows XP Pro, or is it better to say go to the HP website and get a unit with XP Pro pre-installed. Which choice is better and why is it better?

Great question and well articulated!

The implications of upgrading from home to pro are that many of the joint setting will be left in the home state. You will have to specifically go in there to turn on some options. Not all, but some.

If you can afford it, go with pro now. Its a big leap in setting various security policies, and required if you are going to be on a domain. Think future (within the lifespan of the laptop - 5 years?).

IF you go with home now, you can always purchase the upgrade later. This might just be a good time to clean house, and reinstall from scratch anyway. Just keep your data files well orgainzed so you can easily back them up to an external drive later.

good move buy that laptop with xp . pro installed onto it from hp-if ur have any problem you can use ur system restore cd that you creat ur self from da start menu . there will be a recovery file on ur laptop do not delete that ..b/c ur system restore cd.s that you creat will not be of any good to you . that recovery file has ur system & drivers & software that is instlled on ur hp-laptop . & hp- have paid out for a license with microsoft so if you have to restore ur system for da system restore cds. ur not have to re-activate wind xp pro over & over it will just set ur system back upfor you and all ur software that is on da system. so do not remove da recovery file from hard drive, or ur be in for a long time setting ur system back up if you do buy this laptop ask them to send you da win xp pro cd with it as well

you could no longer improve such as you're questioning. XP professional won't do an improve of XP residing house, its going to reformat the disk and reinstall. so which you will desire to backup all your archives first.
