Though I'm not a Canadian of American, I live in Flanders (from the Flanders Field). It's in Belgium.
The dying to the living means a message to the living (soldiers) to continue their struggle so that their dead was not in vain, see text hereunder :
"Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
