We just adopted a 9 months old lab mix from a rescue group. She has been in foster care for a few weeks and was "house trained" there. She has been in our house 3 days and is doing well in all respects except pooping in the house. She has pooped on the floor (in the same spot) every time she has had to go. We take her outside whenever she indicates and she has not urinated in the house. She just did it now after a long walk. I tell her no and then clean it up (with her in a different room). Any ideas?? (I am really against crate training).

Cure the problem by placing the dog's fecal matter in one spot in the yard. The dog will find it and with coaching she'll start using that general area to do her business. You have to show her where it's ok to go

You are doing the right things. Unfortunately, for some reason, she is convinced that it is the right spot to go and has held her poo all that time on the walk until she gets back!
There is a possibility that she was told off badly for going outside int he wrong spot once and so is a bit confused about where to go poo, feeling safer indoors.

The only way to break her habit is to stop her access to the spot - even if the only way is to pile boxes up there! Clean it thoroughly with a non bleach based product. Now watch her like a hawk. As soon as you spot her needing to go, sniffing around the spot, take her out. Stay out with her til she goes. She may hold on in which case, play a game with her as the movement will make her even more desperate. It will probably take you a long time to wait for that poo to come but she will eventually have to go. Praise her instantly and give her a food treat.

Next time it will be easier and if you keep it up, she'll get the point very quickly.

Hope it goes well!

Get a guide on crate coaching. It isn't cruel so long as you follow the rule of only leaving the canine in the crate for brief periods of time (2 month ancient -2 hours max, three month ancient-3 hours max...Etc). It additionally prevents furniture from destruction. Supply them water and a just right bite bone inside the crate. The crate shouldn't be used as punishment, it will have to be there as a trustworthy-haven (Den). Depart the door open so the canine can go in each time s/he desires. Which you can also are trying utilizing potty pads in the course of the apartment. It has a scent that pulls the puppies. Then slowly transfer the potty pads toward the door and then out on the grass. Make a routine and follow it. Take them out while you wake up, earlier than breakfast, after breakfast, earlier than you depart for work, when you get dwelling etc... A agenda is the excellent option to get them many times going rather then each time they want to (which they emerge as going inside of!). Similar to a youngster :) certainly not put there face in the mess, it simplest scares them and makes them petrified of you. They don't realise after the actual fact... Also easy up any pee spots inside of with a pet enzyme answer (observed at any pet store) to avert them from going in the equal areas again! Excellent success!

You should be using a crate. The fastest way to housebreaking puppies is to start by confining the puppy to a small area. The crate serves this purpose because it brings out your puppy's "den instinct" and provides for a sense of security and well-being. It also acts similar to the way a crib or playpen would for a human baby-- it keeps the pup out of trouble when you are not around to supervise.

Ok, describe this "spot", is there anything she might particulary like over there? If so, she might be "marking" that spot of her own.
Or maybe she's just getting used to the house, and something over there either attracts her, or she's bothered by it, and is trying to show that she's boss. The best way to get a dog to know or recongise that you're the boss, bite on her muzzle, DO
NOT bite hard, bite lightly, and if she tries to over throw you, or tries to go potty over there again, growl, or give out a hight pitched bark. (if you can't then just shout out "HEY!" or something) and she'll stop.

I have had dogs like this as well. You have to one, get enzyme cleaner. Natures Miracle is a great one. After she goes take her face and rub her nose in her poop. While you are doing this tell her, "NO, outside!" Then immediatly take her outside and praise her and play a little while you're out there. The take her inside (in a different room) and clean up the mess.

this might sound gross/crazy but take the poop outside in the yard. right after she eats take her outside to that spot and when she finally goes praise her alot. make sure you clean the area in the house good with vinegar or a cleaner that will take the odor out. be consistant. be patient, after all the envirnment is different
for her and stressful.

If she is doing it in the same spot, you should get some enzyme cleaner to get the smell out. You may not be able to smell it, but she can and probably thinks that is her "spot".

Also, keep punishing her for going in the house. She will get it eventually. Part of it is probably adjusting to the new home as well.
