You can reduce your risk of cataracts by not smoking and protecting your eyes from UV rays by wearing sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. The vitamins from leafy green vegetables can also help.

To reduce your risk of macular degeneration, again protect your eyes from UV rays and don't smoke-or quit if you've started. A diet rich in leafy green vegetables is also recommended.

Finally, ensure your blood pressure remains in a healthy range. This can also help reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

Taking these steps won't guarantee you won't get cataracts or macular degeneration, but they will help reduce your risk.

How much time you spend on the computer would determine if you needed any special eyewear or not. Some suggest getting glasses with UVA and UVB blockers will help. If you have any signs of eyestrain (headaches, dry eyes, straining to read the screen), take a break, rest your eyes and use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes.

Cataracts also come with poor health choices. You see more in smokers than in none smokers. Cataract removal is simple. Macular degeneration can be hereditary. Diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and poor nutrition can all rob you of your sight.

Computers won't make you go blind! You grandma probably didn't use one much, if at all. Further more, neither will the television, reading in dim light, or crossing your eyes.

The best way to protect your eyes is with sunglasses when you're outside. Eat a healthy diet. Exercise. See an eye care professional yearly, and make sure your regular MD looks at your eyes when you go in.

You can't prevent cataracts. Then lens in your eye becomes cloudy with age. It just happens, but they replace the lenses and voila! You can see perfectly again. BUT if you have MD, they can't do the cataract surgery. Does she had diabetes? That can be hereditary, yes. Usually untreated high blood sugar causes the MD. So keep yourself healthy and if you should become diabetic, get the right treatment.
