there is a son driving a car with his dad who is in the pasenger seat. they are driving along and hit a patch of ice and swerve off the road. they hit a tree and the father is instantly killed and the son is rushed to the hospital. when he gets there the doctor takes a look at him and says "i can not do surgery on him for he is my son." It's his mom. This joke was first told to try and show the prejudices involved in what careers women can and can't have. At one time, it was almost unheard of for a woman to be a surgeon. And there were many more careers women were not thought of as holding.
The riddle showed that even women did not think of other women as being surgeons.
