I would choose either a narrow to medium plain band that would not look like it clashes with the engagement ring, or a band that has two or four stones that are smaller in size than your engagement ring. The stones should nestle between those of the engagement ring to compliment them.

It depends how the stones are cut on your engagement ring, and whether or not there are any accent stones on the sides of the three main ones.
If your engagement ring has only the three main stones and are princess cut, look for a wedding band that is made of the same metal and has smaller, princess cut stones with the same mounting. The length of smaller stones doesn't necessarily have to meet up with the length of the three main ones. They can go a little longer, like half-way around your finger, or even all the way around if that looks good.
If your ring has accent stones, try to find a band that matches the accent stones' mounting and cut. It should also be made of the same metal.
Before you buy anything, shop around online. Get a good idea of what you want so you can walk right into a jewelry store and show them you know your stuff! There are actually some really good online stores - that's how I got my wedding band!

I chose to buy a matching wedding band for my wife. I gave her a three stone (actually 9 - there are three small stones from my grandmother's ring down along the shoulders). For the wedding ring, it also has small diamonds along the top half. However, it is not a circle. It flares out to the side so that it will snuggles up perfectly next to the engagement ring. Otherwise the diamonds would push it way.

Personally, I would pick a small band that has diamonds that go all the way around it. I think they are called eternity rings. They look great with a three stone engagment ring because one of my teachers has that set. Also, if you just wanted to wear the band, that would elegant too.

Either a nice band with tiny diamonds going half way around or a plain band. I've never understood eternity rings other than the symbolism; who sees the palm side of your ring anyways? Thw width of the band is something you would need to try on with the ring you have and your hands.

What you are looking for is an eternity band.
The stones go all the way around the ring.
Considering a three stone ring is usually a anniversary ring, why not choose a eternity band which is another type of anniversary ring?

Is the centre stone larger? If so, get one with three stones, the size of the smaller shoulder stones. Didn't it come with a matching band? Otherwise, just go with a plain gold band, maybe with etched sides.

I prefer unadorned, medium-width white gold bands, but that's just me.
