A manometer is a device used to measure pressure differences. Typically, one side of a U-shaped tube is connected to a pressurized system and the other side is open to atmospheric pressure. Higher pressure systems must use more dense liquids, such as mercury, to keep from having to make manometers as tall as buildings.
