If you turn your phone sideways next time u will c (if u stretch ur mind a little) that it looks sorta like a smiley face with it's tounge out. depending on ur phone and his he might actually be sending u a smiley but ur phone may not support it so it uses the symbols for it. if u have AIM this might be easier to understand.

Did u ever think to just ask him? I mean he's your friend right? There is no shame in not knowing something.Thats how u learn.Remember that everyone at one time didn't know whatever it is u don't know.Good luck

OK, if you look at it from the side, it's supposed to be a "smiley" with his tongue sticking out. A friendly and playful gesture.

it means, like, 'i'm being silly' or 'thats funny' something along those lines usually, it represents a tounge sticking out.
