I own a D50 and have pretty well figured it out. I am work at the moment and the camera is at home, if you want, please message me and I will email you back things I have learned about this camera, and wherabouts things are in the poorly written manual.

In short - Camera's on board sharpening is way too aggressive, turn it off and use software to give it a touch up later.

Learn how to use the manual white balance, the auto mode frequently makes horrible decisions and you will need to manually intervene.

Buy a tripod and remote control for it.

Check on Nikon's website to ensure that your camera is not part of the battery recall.

There's heaps more, message me, I love this camera.

Read the manual that came with your camera. I know it's boring and you just want to do it all now!!!!! I've just bought a Nikon D40X and I read a page or two each day. I go out and blast off a wad of photos most days. I am learning by reading about 1 function at a time. Currently doing the 3 frames per second thing. If you try to do it all at once it becomes too much and you end up sticking with what you know you can do. AE is auto exposure and AF is auto focus but that's no help unless you know what the terms mean and how to use them. You could join a camera club if there is one locally or find a night class or college course. Depends where you want to go with it. Best of luck.

Several months ago, Popular Photography had a feature on "undocumented" tips for the D50. I do NOT see it on their web site, but maybe you can check out a local library and browse the past year of issues and see if you find the article.

http://www.popphoto.com has 5 articles come up if you search "D50" and you might check them out for possible tips.

Here is a great idea and fun reading... go to http://www.halfpricedmags.com/ and get subscriptions to Popular Photography and Outdoor Photography. You can get 3 year subscriptions for each at about $10. That is $20 for 2 subscriptions that last 3 years, you can't beat it. You will learn a lot about photography. Don't miss this!
