when you finish high school??!!
No. Dont move here. You won't be able to afford it.
Go to college, get a degree, then you can move here and you might be able to afford a shared apartment with 2 other people....

There are so many perks that I'm not going to bother to list them. There are so many schools and so many are great. I don't know about the job market for an 18 year old. Life is great if you have any money left over after paying rent.
The downside is that you will not find a place to live unless your parents help you. It's as simple as that. On a low average, you'll need to have about $4000 up front if you were to find your own place (you'd need even more if it was in Manhattan). They would still have to run a credit check on you. If you don't have any credit or if you cannot document your income proving you make enough to pay the rent each month then you need someone to sign the lease with you as a guarantor. That person would be responsible if you couldn't pay the rent. Good luck finding anyone other than your parent to do that for you. Unless you have some rich friends in OH that are willing to move with you then you'll probably need your parents help.
An easier way in is to be accepted into a NYC college and live in the dorm for awhile. It's a lot easier to find an apartment that way. You would also meet other people in the city that you could possibly move in with.
For whatever reason, the past couple of years I've been meeting a lot of kids in their 20s that have moved here from Cleveland. They all seem to know each other and a lot live in Brooklyn.

I'm a native New Yorker, from Brooklyn, but I've been living in California for over 15 years. I go home at least 2 times a year... Here's the scoop:
That's true! NYC is very expensive! Most apartments are averaging $1500 per month for rent, and that might be a studio apartment! Depends on what neighborhood you decide to move to, food is moderate to expensive. If you eat healthy and organic then its expensive! There's a lot of great things to do in NYC especially during the summer such as free concerts and theatre in the parks. Great food of every culture. Most of the fabulous restaurants you hear about are in Manhattan (NYC).
My suggestion: Visit first!!! Spend some time using the subway and bus system, that way you'll become accustomed to the hustle and bustle of life in NYC. Keep in mind, NYC is very crowded! People are always out and about no matter what time of day or NIGHT!!! Its definitely a 24hour place. If you're thinking about colleges, start applying soon! That's a good way to move to NYC.........

New York is the greatest city in the world.
There are a lot of jobs here, but many of them don't pay very well
Plus our apartment rents are VERY HIGH - you can pay up to $ 3,000 dollars a month for a 1 bedroom apartment - if you get a halfway decent apartment, you WILL have to have a roomate to help you pay the rent
Our main industry here is finance (that is Wall Street), the stock brokers make a LOT of money (upwards of $ 400,000 a year including Christmas bonus) but everybody else down there makes a lot less
We also have a lot of fashion-related companies here, so if you're interested in design, this is the place to go
We also have a lot of media-related businesses here, so there are a lot of opportunities there too
We also have the largest school district in America (over 140,000 employees - including me) and they're always looking for new teachers
And, if you're more blue collar oriented, there are lots of opportunities in the construction industry, and working out at our three airports (Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark Liberty over in New Jersey)
We have some of the greatest colleges in the world here both private - (New York University, Columbia University, Long Island University ect) and public - (the 17 campuses of the City University of New York - City College, Brooklyn College, Queens College, Hunter College ect)
There is a lot of fun stuff to do here - far too much to list. If you like movies? - we got it, live theater? we got it (the home of Broadway, and more theaters than any other place in America) sports? we got the Jets, Giants, Knicks, Nets, Rangers and a lot of other minor sports too, live music? we got it - everything from jazz to rock to hip hop to.. well, if it's a type of music, there's a club here where you can hear it..
Our city is very crowded - get used to walking in crowds "the New York way" - walk swiftly, keep to the right, don't stop suddenly and do NOT just STAND THERE (I HATE it when the tourists do that!!!)
We get around on subways and busses (most of us don't own cars, or even know how to drive) and you get used to the crowds - but again, just "walk like a New Yorker" and, learn how to fold a newspaper the "right" way so you don't bump the person sitting next to you with your elbows when you turn the pages
We have a reputation for being "rude" because we respect each other's space by not talking to each other and ignoring each other in crowds, but we HAVE to do that to survive in such close quarters - but, in a crisis, we can be as helpful to each other as small town folks (moreso, in fact)
I think you'll like it here... it's a great town

im taking a year off from my university and moved to nyc but i live in brooklyn. my rent is usd400 and i get the masterbedroom (the biggest room in the apt) and on top of that, it includes a meal a day on weekdays (5 meals a week). its pretty affordable and im about 20 - 30 min by train to manhattan. i know its not like you get out of the building and BAMM - empire state building but i just started bartending job and have few other side jobs. NYC is the capital of the world and theres a lot of opportunity here. there a lot of cool and creative people and i strongly advice you to come here for a year or two. you will eventually get bored of it and when you do, you can start your college and what not. good luck!!

$1500 for a 1 bedroom???? Try $2500 for a 1 bedroom. Rent is insanely expensive - I am a lawyer who makes 6 figures and i can barely afford a 1 bedroom. Unless you are going to college here and living in a dorm the Manhattan is insanely expensive.
That being said - there's nowhere else in the country I'd rather be living right now :)

Its great to live in, jobs are there if you have skills, schools are highly rated, always activities, etc.
BUT, you need a ton of money. The city is very expensive. In manhatten rents for a 1 bedroom apartment is at least $1500 a month.
