I used to be a table tennis player. I was a long-distance runner as well. My coach told me not to eat for 2 hours prior to the training.
I've run 3 kms within 90 minute after eating. The side of my tummy was hurting.

It's different for everyone experiment and see what works for you but I would not eat a heavy meal just before running, but something light will give your body the fuel it needs to run well

When mine was little it ate crickets and mealworms. Your right they shouldn't be fed constantly, but mine has ate them for a while. Mealworms can cause impaction if fed too many. Just keep offering crickets until he eats. If he doesn't eat anything, you need to contact some sort of vet. Glad if I helped(:
