No, but for many it represents an important part of their lives. I would not want them to impose it on me, so neither would I try to force them to live without it.

Religion is a God of The Gaps so to speak. It serves to answer questions when a mundane explanation cannot yet be found. For example people of the Hellenistic era believed that a God by the name of Helios pulled the sun across the sky with his chariot and people of Norse culture believed that thunder and lightning were caused by Thor using his hammer. Today we know that the sun does not move but rather that the Earth revolves around it and that thunder and lightning are caused by hot and cold air fronts meeting thus we have no more need for Helios and Thor.

As scientific knowledge increases the gap closes and soon there is no more need for gods or the supernatural to serve as an explanation.

That is like asking, is guidance truly a necessity in modern society? In my opinion, religion is all about guidance. If a person does not want it that's up to them.

Religion is not a necessity. Any foray through history will prove that religion has been the cause of more war, death than any other natural disaster. So called religious people who killed others in the name of (Insert your religious higher authorities name here) are rampant throughout history.

Not a very religious person myself but, it only took one earthquake to make me ask for help from a higher power.

When you get a flat no for an answer to a question like yours, you are definitely going to get the agnostics who, are either high school drop outs or have read the bible and their intellect does not allow them to believe.

By most accounts religion has been around BC and probably won't fade in modern society. The one exception being that fanatical islam should go to hell.
