I mean, it seems that people either pick the most popular name (thus ensuring their child will be one of 4 emmas, or jacks, or hannahs, in their class), or they go the opposite way and make up a name that no one will ever be able to spell or pronounce. I guess I should be glad - my child with his traditional name will be the only one his age!

well, of course they can name their child whatever they want. i'm not denying them that right - i'm just wondering what the thought process is, if any.

Some parents want there child to stand out with as unique if a name as they can . Some are concerned with whether the name they pick for their child will be made fun of. Some name their children for family. Some like the traditional names but want to change them up a bit so they are not the same as everyone else. There are so many reasons why parents name their children what they do.
What amazes me is some parents don't think of the impact of a child's name beyond them being a child. Imagine your child having to introduce them selves to a client or a prospective employer. Hello my name is Rainbow Sunshine.

Perhaps one of the reasons some names are more popular than others is because it fits the child very well. Joshua, Brian, and Emma seem to fit many people very well, as far as I've seen.
Other times, the names least popular fit the child better. Names can vary on religion, origin (where they're from), etc.

Yenno, no matter how much you complain, parents are still going to name there kids Apple, Lunar Lander, and Freakhead.
Parents these days (more young ones) are trying to give there child a name that is different, yet not so different that they would be made fun of.
For example, my daughters name is Scarlett. Not weird and made up, but a bit of an older name yet cool. It works!
But I also like Katie, Liz, and common names like that.
But if your kid is named Diamond Sparkle Jewel, than uhhh you may have some issues.
Yay for my explanation!

My boyfriend and I enjoy picking out names for our future kids that are classy and traditional yet not overused. A happy medium is the way to go with this. It's important that you like the name and it goes well with the surname... but I think it's also important that the child will feel neither boring with a trite name nor uncomfortable with something nobody has ever heard of.

I'm Gealic, so I named my daughter Aine. Unfortunately, it's a traditional spelling, so no one will ever be able to pronounce her name properly by reading it.
I have a normal name, yet a lot of people miss-pronounce it anyway. I don't think it really matters how it's spelled; people will always misspronounce names, regardless.
When Aine goes to school, I will request that beside her name, the pronounciation will be placed in brackets.

Yes, some of the "creative" ones are a mouthful!
On the other hand - old traditional ones that had fallen out of favor are unusual too. I'm sure no one knows a US child named "Hermione" that is younger than the Harry Potter books ...

Well since you threw in that "one of 4 jacks" I'll respond. My son's name is Jackson. When I named him I knew of one person named Jackson. I had liked that name since I was a little girl...I always knew that would be my son's name. And if he was a girl he would be called EMMA! I think parents name their kids what they are named because they like that name.

They name there kids with names that they like. I liked both of my kids names and I didn't choose them by what was popular and what wasn't. Every kid makes there name unique even if there is 4 of them in one class.

For something persons, it is a reminder how severe racism can grow to be and what happens while potential is going to the incorrect people.
