Those you chose, would actually take care of your child/children, in the event that something happens to you, and you're no longer able to do it (i.e.Death). Or, was it more of a cerimonial and sentimental thing?

It was more of a sentimental thing. I didn't have anyone other than her father or my mother that I would want to raise my child if I couldn't. I didn't do the whole ceremony thing or the paperwork. I just asked the person and they said ok. It is more of just doing things with the child than anything else. Technically a godparent has to do with contributing to the child spritually. No one that I know does that though.

I'd have to say both.
I was allowed to choose 4 godparents, and so I chose my brother and sister to hopefully care for my son should I get sick or anything (and yes I have made a will) and a single guy friend who I grew up with, and a single girlfriend who was there for me whilst I was pregnant. Choosing my friends was for sentimental reasons and although they love my son I'd rather my family raised him if something was to happen.

I know you are suppose to choose them for that reason but who really does. Usually we choose people who are close to us rather than who would be better parents. And its about the law. The law could care less if your best friend was the godmother and your mother wants the kid. Guess what! your mother gets the kids if the dad isnt around

Yes when my daughter was baptized and I chose her godmothers I chose them with the expectation that god forbid something happen to me they would raise her. And 13 years later I do not regret choosing either of them.

I am going to be the Godparent to my friend's daughter that is due in Feb, but she lives in another state. It is more sentimental. I lost a baby girl in Aug at 21 weeks and her and her husband decided to ask me to be the Godmother.

I am the God Mother of 2 of my nephews. When I was asked by their parents, we had the conversation of "in case we die...". I am expected to be the guardian of them until they are 18 if something would happen to my sisters and brothers-in-law. That's why it's very important that you choose someone that you could see raising your kids.
