I got an xray from my dentist with a dark area under the #18 moler. The tooth does not hurt and can sence hot and cold. Endodntist could not find cracks and have no fillings in that tooth.Facial/mouth surgeon says still could be a dead tooth or a cyst. Recommends doing root canal anyway and if tooth is dead then problem solved if not then surgery to remove poss. cyst. He claims if he does surgery 1st he will more than likely kill the tooth anyway and i will have to get root canal done. Sooo im not sure just looking for answers curious???

It's a wisdom tooth, you dont even need them for proper function. Get it out, along with all of your other wisdom teeth! Do not waste your money on rootcanal, surgery etc for soemthing that doesnt even need to be there. Unless, on the other hand you are missing other teeth in that quadrant, then I would do whatever I could to save it. Good luck!

Lol, Please excuse me! I am a canadian dental assistant and I should have looked into where the question was coming from. In canada we divide the mouth into quadrants 1-4, so you see where i saw 18 being the maxillary right last molar. I am sorry to not have looked further into your location, I do understand the universal number system in the United states. So please do not think I am an idiot! giving me two thumbs down!! Psht... Again I am sorry I didnt check your location before ansering the question. Thanks and good luck! Ps. go ahead with the root canal!!!

UMM LARISSA!!!! #18 IS A WISDOM TOOTH IT IS THE UPPER RIGHT HAND SIDE, I SUGGEST YOU GET IT REMOVED YOU DO NOT NEED IT ANY TREATMENT ON THAT TOOTH WOULD BE A WASTE OF MONEY. TAKE IT OUT.....

In australia it is called the #18 all the wisdom teeth are 8's. it must be different overseas. because the first molars are the 6's then the 2nd molars are the 7's so that makes the 3rd molars the 8's which is the wisdom tooth the #18

Well if you saw an endodontist already, you do the root canal. If he thinks that's best, I would go with that. I would want to get rid of the dark area under my tooth.

tooth # 18 is NOT a wisdom tooth, it is a lower left 2nd molar, 3rd molars are your wisdom teeth. my recommendation would be to get a second opinion from another dentist if you are uncertain about the options you are being given. although if you have seen a general dentist , an endodontist, and an oral surgeon and they are all telling you to get it done then that is probably what needs to be done.

#18 is NOT a wisdom tooth so it's worth saving. If you refuse a second opinion and cost is not an issue than have it done. Otherwise, get a second opinion and take it from there.

You did not mention an electric pulp test. This could provide valuable information.
