I also live in Indy (this is my third time). I've gotten accustomed to it. The city has grown more metropolitan over the years. It's definitely a different life style than NYC.
Having never been to NYC myself, I can't compare, but I have lived in Dallas, St. Louis, San Francisco, New Orleans and lots of smaller towns. IMO, the state is still a little behind the times (no offense meant to you Hoosiers). S&P had a good answer, though.
There's plenty to do, if you look for it. Clubs, live music, arts, theatre, shopping and of course sports. You'll find the cost of living is not as high as NYC and you're not far from Chicago, Louisville, St. Louis or Cincinnatti.
The mass transit (IndyGo) system leaves a lot to be desired, but it can save money (depending on where you live). I ride the bus on occasion so I know it's not terrible. You'll definitely want a car if you don't have one.
As far a native Americans... they are few and far between (however I do work with two, but they're originally from the southwest). There is a ever expanding Latino community and some pockets of other ethnic origins. The African American community is pretty much all over town. Unfortunately there are still some racial divisions, but not as bad as there were 20 years ago.
Areas to live in... the northside is still expanding and fairly cosmopolitan, the southside is more of a quiet and 'southern' type area, the westside (where I live now) is another expanding area especially in light industrial and the families that follow the jobs. I don't know as much about the eastside, but from what I've seen it's a little like an older version of the westside, just not as much new industry or growth. Of course there's always downtown. I've lived and worked downtown and really enjoyed it. Lots of restoration and new 'housing' being built. If you look at living downtown, my advice it to stay within the 'mile square' or at max a 1/2 mile beyond. If you like older historic areas the old northside is in resurgence, Woodruff Place and Irvington are also nice (lived in both also). So...
I've babbled enough. Good luck on your move and I hope you enjoy Indianapolis.

Very slow here.. Not much to do.. Really hard to find jobs that pay enough to get by on.. As for the "clubs" and nightlife in indianapolis.. NOTHING like being in NYC..

Sup Girlfriend...
I am born and raised in Indy and thru the years Indy has gone from "Nap" town to an active place to live. The best parts of town are on the north side where I live. The neighborhoods are really nice and the best shopping areas are around in this area.
YOU WILL NEED A CAR HERE! Unlike NYC (which I envy) you have subway systems, cabs, busses, and ect to get around town. Our bus system sucks a little and the only other way to get around town other than your feet is by car.
Sorry not many Indians in Indiana...unless as in Indian you mean people from India.
Once you have explored Indianapolis you will feel comfortable here just watch out with traffic, people tend to drive crazy here. Indy has its benefits by being close to other major cities in neighboring states like Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville and a decent drive or flight away from St. Louis.
You will find that we are obsessed with sports since you are from NYC we welcome sports rivals.
There are some great clubbing spots and unlike NYC (I have a friend who lived there) you don't have to pay tons of money to have fun. You can hang downtown at night where there are a strip of night clubs but parking sucks and clubs charge cover...up on the north side clubs are mostly found in Broad Ripple, an old neighborhood area where some of the best clubs are found. If you go further north you will find mostly bars and lounges which I call warm-ups before the night starts.
One thing I will suggest is get good internet connections or cable cus Indy is out of touch when it comes to good entertainment, especially on the radio...
But I think you will like it here. I have many friends from NYC who moved here that like it better here than in NYC in their point of view is because it’s so calm. We are the 12th largest city in the nation and despite what you may have heard this city is as urban as any other capital city or major city it’s just for us it’s more spread out.
if you haven't figured out a place to live I suggest living near some shopping districts or neighborhood areas that have basic needs shopping so you won't have to drive too far. On the North side you have: Trader’s Point, College Park, Park 100, Willow North, Greenbrier, Nora, Keystone, Clearwater, Lawrence (town), Carmel (town), Fishers (town)....these are the areas I roam around mostly. I forgot Castleton is also north as well. South of where I am Downtown Indy. Further west is Lafayette Square but its a little ghetto fab...East of me is Washington Square the west side mirror image...despite the bad rep these places have you can find some good stores and places to buy a good car.
I am not a ‘Southsider’ so all I know is Greenwood and the south side is a little too quiet and sparse for my taste...I suggest staying north of I-70 as possible!!!
I think I may have over answered your question but I think you will be fine no matter what you do.
Be safe!

It's def more slow paced/laid back here compared to NYC. But you can always do to a club or bar with your friends. I like it here though.
Also different sides of the city can vary widely. I've lived on everyside of town so it just depends on what you're looking for.

I grew up there and still visit. It's a good place. There's not a lot of Indians (although there is a Native American museum); there's a lot of Hoosiers.
