I'm trying to make a few shadowboxes that will contain American flags that were flown while I was in Iraq. I want to place a certificate and medals above the flag, which the folded flag will be resting on the bottom centered in a 16x20 box. Nearly all shadow boxes I seen had the flag either above everything else placed in the box, or in a top corner. Is there proper etiquette for flag placement in a shadowbox?

The American flag should always be above anything else placed in OR on the shadowbox. This is done out of respect for our nation's symbol. The flag should be folded with the standard tri-fold (triangle shaped) fold and only the field of stars should be showing when placed in the box. If folded properly, the flag should have a star at the top of the triangle with the remaining visible stars coming down from that in a pyramid shape. Any engravings or plates attached to the shadowbox should be at the bottom and all certificates, medals and other memorabilia should be placed in order of rank precedence or importance below the flag.

I've look for any instructions before but can't find one. What I've been told, it's somewhat of an unwritten rule/s. The flag is place depend on the type of shadow boxes. The common rule for flags is that you must have one star on top, two on the middle, and three on the bottom. Ranks is on the right and it's place from the highest to bottom. The medals are place from the senior and on, mini medals are mainly use. any thing else will go in the middle of the box or bottom. Hope this helps.

No - but not surprising being as I'm Scottish! But I do have to say that the Americans on the whole are to be admired for their flag flying. Here in the UK - the only flags flying are over government buildings and Royal castles and palaces. Now and again you may see one unfurled for St. George's day - but not often. The flags in Scotland are the Scottish Nationalist mostly where flown by individuals - otherwise it is the Union Jack which is the flag of union between England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Not the same thing at all! You should be rightly proud of your flag and your country.

Usually when placing coins or medals on the shadow box containing the flag, they go on the bottom of the case.
