Hydraulic machines are able to use liquid pressure to transfer energy from one place to another because of the following liquid properties:Liquids are incompressable, liquid pressure acts equally in all directions, changes in liquid pressure are transmitted instantaneosly to all parts of the liguid.. They work because of their ability to magnify the force simply by using a piston of larger area, their ability to apply a force in any direction at any point and their ability to supply the force to several points simulateneously

A hydraulic device works when you or a pump moves hydraulic fluid from one cylinder, through hoses, to another cylinder, causing the cylinder to lengthen or shorten, as to operate a piston or move another mechanical part.

It works on the principles of many simple machines: You put a certain amount of effort moving an object a certain distance, and the hydraulic pump or lift or whatever converts distance to force, moving another object less distance but with greater force.

The ratio by which distance is reduced is theoretically the same as the ratio by which force is multiplied (friction always claims a little), and in a hydraulic device, it is equal to the ratio between the area of the cross-section of the cylinders or chambers in the pump and that of the lift or other device.

For example, if your pump's cylinder is round and 2 inches in diameter, and your lift's cylinder is round and 6 inches in diameter, the ratio of the areas is 9 to 1, and your device will lift with nine times as much force as the pump can provide, but only one ninth the distance.

If you felt like it, you could make it work in reverse by making your lift's cylinder smaller than that of the pump, in which case the lift would push a greater distance but with less force.

Best example is in your car with your brakes or with your steering.

Instead of their being a direct physical link to your tires through your steering wheel a hydraulic connection is used. If there is a direct physical link, then you literally have to use enough muscle to turn the wheels of your car. This can be difficult if you are driving a big car, or making a sharp quick turn.

Hydraulics allow you to do the same thing using fluid force rather than physical force. When you move the wheel, a "plunger " attached to the wheel moves inside of tank of liquid. As the plunger compresses the liquid, the liquid is forced up "wheel" and the wheel turns left or right.

This is highly simplified.
