I had a 1992 Explorer and encountered the same problem, but I just forced my way in there and got it done. Make sure that the whole engine is cool (especially the block) as your arms will be really close to it at times. I found that going through the front wheel wells worked easier for the plugs closest to the firewall. Good luck.

i have had several explorers and have found the best way is to buy a plug socket with the ball type swivel and a 5-6 inch extension already attached from autozone or advance for about ten bucks I use a stubby or short ratchet. The drivers side is not bad but it is easiest to take the pass. front tire off and go at it through the wheel well sounds like more work to remove the wheel but believe me you will thank me when you are done. some times on the pass. side I have needed a plug socket with the hex head on the top and used a 3/4 boxed end to get the plug closest to the fire wall remember to use anti seize on the threads and silicone on the boots and dont forget the platinum plugs

Welcome to the wonderful world of FORD. Using a universal joint attachment on the end of the wrench will help out a lot. It will give you more angles to play with so you can break then plugs loose but your just going to have to deal with the lack of space. Once again this is proof that engineers need to be forced to work on the things they design. the wheel wells do help out.

Remove the front wheels, it is much easier to go through the fender wells.

I think it's these stupid designs that have turned off many American buyers. I guess that's why Ford stopped advertising "they have the better idea".
