As a former Christian, I too wondered what exactly that meant. We are told that when we die we go to heaven. The price of sin is eternal damnation and without Jesus's sacrifice we would be doomed. So I always wondered, is everyone prior to Jesus in hell (i.e. Moses, Abraham, Job, etc.)? If this isn't the case, then what exactly WAS the purpose of Jesus's sacrifice? Edit: I think that the idea is that before Jesus, you had to make sacrifices to atone for your sins. So if you sin and then die before you can make the sacrifice then you will go to hell (which is disturbingly similar to Catholic's beliefs of dying before confessing a sin). On the other hand, after Jesus sacrificed himself, then you don't have to worry about it because he is the ultimate sacrifice for your sins, so it's "taken care of" (so to speak).

it means if you accept jesus into your heart and own up to your sins, your sins will be forgotten and you will be admitted into heaven. But in no way is it a get out of jail free card. Owning up to ones sins means not making excuses for what mistakes they have made. Most of humanity cant even admit they did certain things let alone take responsibility for them. If jesus would have died for our sins then there would be a lot more ppl in hell. just kidding. But if jesus didnt die for our sins the planet wouldnt have exploded, you would have to live your live as according to the ten commandments, if not, you would go to hell, case closed.

The bible says that everyone has sinned and falls short of the glory of God. Because of our sins, we all deserve to be punished and condemned to hell for eternity.
But because God loves us so much he wants us to spend eternity in Heaven with him. He is a God of justice and cannot simply turn his head at our sin and say "Well it's okay, you can get into Heaven anyway." So being the God of love and Justice that He is, someone had to take the punishment for our sins. So he sent his one and only son to take OUR PUNISHMENT. He was beaten with a lead tipped whip until his skin was torn off. He was nailed to a cross and suffered an extremely painful death, so that we would not have to take that punishment. Have you ever taken the blame for someone else so that they won't have to suffer? It means the same thing.
The bible says that we cannot do anything to save ourselves, so we must trust what Jesus did and receive Him as our Personal Savior to be saved from our sins.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he sent his only begotten son, so that everyone who believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
I hope that is a simple enough explanation. God Bless.

Simply..okay
We all have a connection to God..we cannot be sperated form God unless we choose to be...in Matthew when jesus was haning on the cross Jesus said "God God why do you forsake me?" this means that Jesus was diconnected from God temporarily.
Since Jesus took the disconntection that means he took all of our sins..I mean he knows about adultry everything! He died so you won't have to be disconnected from God. Jesus was destined to die. So no running off and living till and old age. If he didn't die for us we would still be having to sacrafice animals to talk and be saved to God. Like in the Old Testament...I hope I answered your quesiton

That means that you are a sinner. You don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
He died on the cross as a perfect and completely innocent man. He never sinned. Yes, He was temped...but never sinned.
By Him dying on the cross, He save us from death. Now, we can eternal life with God the Father, our creator.
God's plan happened just as it was supposed too...and just at the right time. Nothing (not even Satan himself) could stop Jesus from laying down His life...for you (and me for that matter.)

Well, this world was and is crazy. We all do stupid stuff- we all sin. So God sent Jesus. Jesus sacrificed His life, Jesus is a part of God. (Kind of hard to understand... but Jesus IS a part of God.) Anyways, he died on the cross, showing His love, showing God's love. He died for ALL the sins of the world.
It was kind of a trade deal.... Jesus dies, our sins are wiped away.
And He did. And our sins are wiped away.
He rose again though.. which is amazing. Then went up to Heaven with God. Kind of confusing. But know that if you believe in God and this, if you have accepted Christ into your heart; accepted Him to take your life in His hands, you will be saved. Meaning when you die, you will go to Heaven instead of Hell.
Hope this helps!

A simple answer? lol ok I'll try ...
God makes man.
Man falls because Satan gets him to eat the fruit God told him no to eat.
Man kicked out of Eden.
Now sin is in the world and sin means death, physical and spiritual.
Physical death means your spirit leaves and goes to hell.
Jesus comes to earth as God-man.
Sin requires a blood sacrifice.
Jesus comes to Earth as God-man.
Jesus takes upon Him all the punishment God the Father (Adonai) would have stored up for us.
The blood sacrifice is made.
Satan is defeated.
The war is won but the battles continue.
Without Jesus making that sacrifice you would certainly 100% go to hell. However, because of Jesus you can go to heaven instead, which is good news if I ever heard it...
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life". (John 5:24)
"...if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)
Saved therefore means saved from spiritual death, from hell in other words...and despite the scoffing of those who (sadly for them) don't believe in hell, it is a real place and many are destined for it because they have rejected the Lord.
"...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power..." (2 Thessalonians 1: 7-9)

Vedic wisdom may hold the true answer to this Christian question.
Hinduism, and related sects have a vocation amongst its holy men called a guru.
The role of a guru is to teach- and strengthen the God (Krishna) conciousness of his followers. The guru and followers share karmic effects according to the conduct of each.
Now for this reason most Hindu gurus carefully choose their followers by selecting and initiating them from the temples. Jesus said anyone can be my follower, just by choosing to be so.
The unjust death of Jesus paid back the karma for countless sins- i.e the 'for' equals 'in exchange for' like we still say today. This 'saves mankind' by sparing followers from lower rebirths after death- would you (more importantly your soul) really enjoy another lifetime as a tree or pig?
Everyone choosing Jesus as their guru continues to benefit from this act. Some would say that the karmic weight of billions of sins of those choosing Jesus as guru will weigh on the soul of Jesus eventually- causing him a lower rebirth; i.e returning to Earth (the karma of good souls buys them a varying amount of time in the heavenly universe- before the karma is exhausted and the soul returns to Earth via reincarnation- for those with the most karma this time period is eternity itself).
A fall from the highest heavenly plains has never occured- the karmic vacuum in those followers who relied on Jesus to spare their souls would probably result in their instant downfall (eg Apocalypse- Jesus probably originally calculated that no-one would refuse his generosity as guru if offered and hence the entire humanity would be at risk if this event occured).

I think it means he died in place of us. Because we were the ones who sinned in killing him. Or it could mean that are sins killed him. By hanging him on the cross we sinned. But I don't think there is any set any only Jesus knows what exactly he did.
