Good question - I totally agree it is crazy.
Never gone above 3 1/2 for toast, muffins, bagels, crumpets or anything else that I can think of.

Maybe it's because in an alternate dimention, people eat things burnt. No, probably not. Um, I really don't know. Maybe the toaster people think it's just a cruel and unusual punishment for people taking toast for granted, and so for those stupid enough to turn their toasters up all the way, they get an unpleasant surprise. Haha, no I really don't know. You should write to the toaster people and ask, or I could!! Haha, brilliant!

The creaters of toasters just want to give us more options. I mean If the toasters only had one setting that would be boring. I sometimes like my toast light and sometimes I like it dark. I also make other stuff in it besides toast and they require different settings.

Different breads weigh differently and toasters work mainly on weight of what's being cooked. You say you use the 3 setting, if you were to use say a multi grain bread or a bagle, then it'd probably toast differently for either of those.

Some people enjoy punishing themselves. Or the manufacturers did that so people would kick themselves when they burnt their toast and have to pull out a knife to scrape off the burnt matter. It's one of those mysteries that will never be solved...

It's to make sure that people burn their toast so they use more bread - I'm sure there's a conspiracy between the bakers and the toaster people.
