If you have a canon ae1, which is a good, older camera, you probably don't have the budget for expensive filters. Luckily, one of the best softening filters is also free.

Breath on the lens. It will fog up and you can watch it slowly dissipate. You can watch it get gradually sharper and take the photo when it is appropriate.

If you are looking to soften the flash, just put some kleenex over the flash. It also works great and is almost free.
